If a jungle lodge or riverboat cruise isn't exactly how you want to experience the rainforest, then maybe a camping trip into the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve would be. Our camping program is a unique opportunity to experience the rainforest up close and personal. This program starts with 2 days at our rainforest lodge, 4 days camping while exploring the reserve, and 1 final night at the lodge.

The intent of this program is to provide a venue for you to indulge your personal interests and reasons for visiting wild rainforest. An expert GreenTracks guide will accompany you throughout. Are you a photographer wanting to make the most of your time in the rainforest, getting all the photos of wildlife you can, with an expert guide to assist you? This is the trip for you. The activities on the camping portion of the trip can be tailored to suit the campers' interests... photography, birding, wildlife viewing, herpetology, fishing, ethnobotany, etc.

Itinerary

Day One: Greeting of your morning flight from Lima to Iquitos. Transfer by private bus or car to Nauta and boat transfer to the Pacaya-Samiria Amazon Lodge. On the way, we will visit the confluence of the Ucayali and Marañon rivers, the two great rivers that merge to form the Amazon River. Enjoy the spectacular view of the river juncture from a 100-foot observation tower. Upon arrival to the lodge, check into your rooms. Lunch. In the afternoon, we will make a hike through the forest that surrounds the lodge for an introduction to rainforest flora and fauna. Depending on the weather, we may observe a beautiful sunset from the lodge watch-tower. Dinner. Overnight at the Pacaya-Samiria Amazon Lodge. (L,D)

Day Two: A wild jungle dawn. Early morning bird watching. Breakfast. Departure to the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve. Boat excursion to Nauta creek and the surrounding lakes (cochas). Box lunch. Observation of flora and fauna. Return to lodge. Overnight at the Pacaya-Samiria Amazon Lodge. (B,L,D)

Day Three: Early morning Breakfast. Start of the camping trip to the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve. Thanks to Zhiping Zhao & Steve CooperTravel by boat to the Rio Yanayacu-Pucate. The trip may last 4 to 5 hours. Chance to observe gray and pink dolphins, aquatic birds, river turtles, sloths, monkeys, parrots and macaws. Box lunch. Arrival at the camping site. Afternoon excursions to accommodate your interests. Dinner. Caiman spotting along the river. Overnight at the camp site in tents with the night sounds of the jungle as your background music. (B,L,D)

Day Four: Breakfast. In the morning, activities to suit you. We might suggest a hike through primary rainforest to Pona Lake to observe wildlife. Lunch. In the afternoon, your choice, but we might make a canoe trip down the Yagua Creek. Dinner. Overnight at the camp site. (B,L,D)

Day Five: Breakfast. Activities to suit, can include fishing for piranha and the many other species of fish, and a rainforest hike or boat trip in search of interesting flora and fauna. Overnight at the camp site. (B,L,D)

Day Six: Breakfast. Morning visit to a riverside village. A chance to learn of the local inhabitants in the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve and appreciate their dependence upon the wildlife, plants and waters of the Reserve. Lunch. Return trip to the lodge. Overnight at the Pacaya-Samiria Amazon Lodge. (B,L,D)

Day Seven: Breakfast. Morning to relax and pack your gear. Lunch. Departure by boat to Nauta and transfer to the Iquitos airport for your flight to Lima. (Or hotel in Iquitos.) (B,L)
