Descola lived deep in the Upper Amazon for three years with the profoundly isolated Achuar Jivaro Indians, then spent the better part of a decade writing this vividly observant and intelligent chronicle. An academic by training but a storyteller by nature, Descola resolved to remain openminded, and his receptivity paid off when he and his wife were all but adopted by the Achuar community. Descola combines lively anecdotes with perceptive reflections to capture the timeless ambience of Achuar village life and describe the elaborate etiquette that governs its busy polygamous households. What emerges most clearly is the sense of wholeness in the Achuar world; there is no conflict between people and nature, or between rational thought and imagination. Dreams, visions, and the mystical knowledge of shamans are integral to decisions regarding health, hunting, gardening, and, on a violent and disturbing front, acts of vengeance. Clearly grateful for and amazed by his experiences, Descola renders Achuar life and cosmology with sensitivity, wonder, and humor. Donna Seaman Copyright© 1996, American Library Association.

Amazon rain forests. The story of ethnobotanist Mark Plotkins's apprenticeship

also vividly clarifies what destruction of the rain forests may ultimately cost
humanity.

Ayahuasca is a tea made from two plants found, until recently, only in the Amazon basin. Indigenous people of the region have used it for medicinal and shamanic purposes since time immemorial. In the last century, it has been ceremonially incorporated by polyglot Christian/goddess religions springing up in Brazil and by seekers on the margins of consciousness exploration. In this book, Metzner, a hallucinogenic and mystical experience researcher for over 35 years, has compiled essays and journal-type writings from a wide assortment of people who have experienced its divinity-evoking effects--28 scientists, psychologists, chemists, curious laypeople, and practitioners of these religions. While uneven in literary ability, each contributor provides an insightful peek behind the curtain of an experience that until now has been shrouded in tribal secrecy and cult ritual--truly an adventure into the Amazon of the mind. --Randall Cohan
Ever since the "consciousness
revolution" in the 1960s, dedicated spiritual seekers and scientific researchers
from all continents have explored the world of psychoactive and hallucinogenic
plants. In Ayahuasca, objective scientific information and the narratives of
ayahuasca users -- shamans and others -- are presented together. Readers will
also learn the pharmacology of this Amazonian plant.

This memoir of travels
in the Amazon has an agreeable twist: Nicole Maxwell was hunting for medicinal
plants with the triple goal of conserving the jungle, improving the lot of humanity
and having a great deal of fun. Her tales span countries and decades, as we
watch her mature from an enthusiastic if somewhat naive idealist to a true trouper.
Despite setbacks and disillusionment, she never lost sight of her goal, and
lived to see others pick up the task of cultivating important medicinal plants
and knowledge, and further her cause of preserving the jungle through wiser
use.

Amazonia long has been a focus of debate about the impact of the tropical rain forest environment on indigenous cultural development. Contributors draw on the sub-disciplines of anthropology and address changes in native societies as a result of interaction with Western civilization to present an integrated perspective of Amazonian studies .
This edited volume draws
on the subdisciplines of anthropology to present an integrated perspective of
Amazonian studies. The contributors address transformations of native societies
as a result of their interaction with Western civilization from initial contact
to the present day, demonstrating that the pre- and postcontact characteristics
of these societies display differences that until now have been little recognized.
In particular, Amazon floodplain societies are shown to be more complex in terms
of cultural development than previously had been supposed. Most chapters deal
with some aspect of the ethnology of a specific tribe or group of tribes, or
of Amazonia as a whole; others focus on archaeology, ethnohistory, biological
anthropology, and linguistics.

A well written, easily
readable biological treatise about basic American Tropical ecology. Initial
chapter on the climate that dictates all else in the tropics is paticularly
interesting. The remainder of the book is divided into various chapters dealing
with various plant and animal idiosyncracies. Numerous fascinating facts, anectodes
spice up what can potentially be a pretty dry, high-school biology textbook
subject matter. The section on the importance of excrements to the rainforest
and two chapters on tropical ants and their social lives fascinating. Good reading
for anyone interested in basic tropical ecology.
